How NEA bills you: Nepal Electricity Authority uses progressive slab tariffs — your first 20 units cost the least, and each additional slab is more expensive. Most households on a 15A connection pay between Rs 1,500–4,000/month depending on whether they run AC and water heaters. The 5A connectionis a lifeline rate for low-income households — first 20 units are essentially free (only the Rs 30 service charge applies). Rates compiled from current NEA tariff schedules; tariffs may change with each ERC review.

Frequently Asked

How do I know my connection amperage?
Check your NEA bill — it lists the connection type (e.g., '5A', '15A', '30A'). Or look at the meter box at your home: there's a sticker or printed label showing the rated amperage. Most apartments and small homes use 5A or 15A. Standalone houses and larger flats typically use 30A. Homes with AC, heavy water heaters, or EV charging often need 60A.
Why is my bill higher in winter?
Higher consumption from water heaters (geyser), room heaters, electric blankets, and shorter daylight hours pushing more lighting use. A geyser running 2 hours a day adds about 60-90 kWh/month — enough to push your bill from one slab to a more expensive one.
What if my consumption is below 20 units?
On a 5A connection, you only pay the Rs 30 minimum service charge — no per-unit fee on your first 20 units. On 15A/30A/60A connections, the first 20 units are charged at Rs 3.00/unit plus the higher service charge for that amperage.
Are there any taxes or extra fees?
Residential electricity in Nepal is currently VAT-exempt. There's no additional sales tax on the energy charge. NEA does charge a one-time meter installation fee for new connections, but ongoing bills consist only of service charge + energy charge.
Can I reduce my bill?
Biggest savings come from switching to LED lights (saves 60-80% vs incandescent), insulating your geyser tank, and using a timer on the water heater. Each unit you cut below the 51-150 slab line saves Rs 11 instead of Rs 12-13 from higher slabs.
Is this calculator official?
No — this is a third-party estimate based on publicly-published NEA tariff data. For your actual bill, refer to the official meter reading and the bill issued by your NEA branch. Rates may change with each Electricity Regulatory Commission (ERC) tariff review.
