Frequently Asked

When does the renewal fall due?
The fiscal year for Nepal vehicle tax is Srawan to Ashadh (mid-July to mid-July). Your bluebook becomes due for renewal at the start of each fiscal year. You usually have a 30-day grace period after the fiscal year ends before late penalties start accruing.
What is third-party insurance and is it mandatory?
Yes — third-party insurance is mandatory for every vehicle in Nepal. It covers damages or injury you might cause to a third party (not damage to your own vehicle). You cannot renew your bluebook without valid third-party insurance. Rates depend on vehicle type.
How is the late penalty calculated?
Bagmati Province applies a 5% surcharge per month past due on the base tax, capped at 100% of the base tax (so the maximum penalty is doubling your base tax). Other provinces have similar but not identical penalty schedules.
Can I pay online?
Yes — both Khalti and eSewa allow bluebook renewal payments online. You'll need your bluebook number, vehicle owner details, and engine/chassis information. The actual smart-card sticker still needs to be collected from a Transport Office or partnered service point.
What about electric vehicles?
Nepal's tax structure heavily favors EVs — typically half (or less) the rate of equivalent petrol/diesel vehicles. EVs are taxed by motor power (kW), not engine displacement (CC). Pick 'Electric Motorcycle' or 'Electric Car' above and enter the motor's kW rating.
How do rates differ between provinces?
Each of Nepal's 7 provinces sets its own motor vehicle tax via their provincial Finance Act. Bagmati and Gandaki tend to have the highest big-engine rates; Lumbini and Karnali are typically the lowest. The small-engine (under 150cc bike, under 1000cc car) gap between provinces is usually only Rs 500-1,000. We cross-reference autoncell, nepalitechnical, and bizsewa for each province's published schedule.
