Restricted Countries

Citizens of these countries must apply at a Nepali embassy/consulate — no visa-on-arrival:

Afghanistan, Cameroon, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Ghana, Iraq, Liberia, Nigeria, Somalia, Syria, Zimbabwe, Palestine

What you need at immigration: a passport valid for at least 6 months, one passport-size photo, the visa fee in USD or equivalent foreign currency (most credit cards also accepted at Kathmandu airport), proof of onward travel, and a completed arrival form. The whole process takes about 30 minutes at TIA if queues are short.

Frequently Asked

Where do I get the visa-on-arrival?
At Tribhuvan International Airport (Kathmandu), Bhairahawa (Lumbini) Airport, Pokhara International Airport, and at all major overland border crossings with India and China. Fill out the arrival form on the plane or at the kiosk, pay at the cashier counter, get the visa sticker in your passport, exit through immigration. Whole process takes ~30 min.
Can I pay the visa fee in Nepali Rupees?
No — visa fees are accepted in USD or major foreign currencies (EUR, GBP, AUD, etc.). Credit cards are accepted at major airports. There's an ATM in the TIA arrival hall if you need to withdraw cash, but most travelers find it easier to bring USD cash.
What countries are SAARC for visa purposes?
SAARC member states: Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka. Citizens of these countries (except Afghanistan and Pakistan, due to bilateral arrangements) can get one free 30-day Nepal tourist visa per calendar year.
What if I want to stay longer than 90 days?
The maximum initial visa is 90 days. You can extend at Department of Immigration offices in Kathmandu or Pokhara — USD 45 for the first 15-day extension, then USD 3/day. Maximum total stay is 150 days per calendar year. For longer stays, you need a different visa category (tourism doesn't allow indefinite extension).
Can I get a multi-entry visa on arrival?
Yes — the standard tourist visa is multi-entry, so you can leave Nepal (e.g., trek into India for a few days) and re-enter without paying again, as long as your visa is still valid. No additional fee for multi-entry — it's included in the standard fee.
What's the difference between 'on arrival' and 'online' visa?
They cost the same. The online application just lets you pre-fill the form and (optionally) pre-pay — saving 5-10 minutes at the airport. Whether you apply online or on arrival, you still get the same visa sticker in your passport. The online portal is at nepalimmigration.gov.np.
