WHO BMI Classification

CategoryBMI RangeDescription
Underweight< 18.5May indicate undernutrition. Common in Nepal — check protein intake.
Normal18.5 – 25Healthy weight range.
Overweight25 – 30Increased risk of cardiovascular issues.
Obese class I30 – 35Higher health risks. Consult a doctor.
Obese class II35 – 40Significant health risks.
Obese class III≥ 40Severe risks. Medical consultation recommended.
Context for Nepal: According to the Nepal Demographic and Health Survey, roughly 17% of Nepali women and 12% of men are underweight (BMI < 18.5), while about 22% of women and 17% of men are overweight or obese. Urban populations (Kathmandu, Pokhara, Birgunj) skew toward overweight; rural populations skew toward underweight. BMI is a screening tool — for body composition or athletic build, waist-to-hip ratio and body-fat percentage are better measures.

Frequently Asked

How is BMI calculated?
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height² (m²). So someone 170cm (1.7m) tall weighing 65kg has BMI = 65 / (1.7 × 1.7) = 22.5, which is in the normal range. The formula is the same worldwide.
Is BMI accurate for Nepali / South Asian body types?
The WHO has noted that South Asian populations may face elevated cardiovascular risk at lower BMI than European populations. Some doctors use 23 (instead of 25) as the overweight threshold for South Asians. For a quick screening, the standard scale above is fine; for individual diagnosis, talk to a doctor about your specific risk factors.
What's the BMI difference between men and women?
The BMI thresholds are the same, but body composition differs: women naturally have ~5-10% more body fat than men at the same BMI. So a man with BMI 24 and a woman with BMI 24 typically have different fat-to-muscle ratios.
Does BMI work for athletes or bodybuilders?
Not well — muscle is denser than fat, so a fit athlete can have a high BMI without being unhealthy. If you lift weights or have a muscular build, ignore BMI and use body-fat percentage instead.
What about children and elderly?
This calculator is for adults (18-65). Children use age-and-sex-specific BMI percentile charts (different from adult BMI). The elderly may need adjusted thresholds since healthy weight ranges shift with age — consult your doctor.
