Nepali numbering (lakh & crore)

Nepal uses the Indian numbering system — lakh (1,00,000) and crore (1,00,00,000) — instead of million/billion. This tool follows that convention so the words match what banks and the Inland Revenue Department use.

  • 1,000 = One Thousand / एक हजार
  • 1,00,000 = One Lakh / एक लाख
  • 10,00,000 = Ten Lakh / दश लाख
  • 1,00,00,000 = One Crore / एक करोड
  • 1,00,00,00,000 = One Arab / एक अर्ब

Frequently Asked

What does 'Only' / 'मात्र' at the end mean?
"Only" (and its Nepali equivalent "मात्र") is the formal ending used on cheques to indicate the amount is complete — no further digits are to be added. This prevents fraud where someone could add zeros after the written amount.
How is 'lakh' different from 'million'?
One lakh = 100,000 (1,00,000 in Indian notation). The Indian/Nepali system groups digits as 12,34,56,789 — three from the right, then twos — whereas Western notation uses 1,234,56,789 with threes throughout. Nepal banks, IRD, and government forms all use the lakh/crore system.
What about paisa? How is fractional amount handled?
1 NPR = 100 paisa. If you enter 1234.50, the tool produces 'Twelve Hundred Thirty Four Rupees Fifty Paisa Only' / 'बाह्र सय चौँतीस रुपैयाँ पचास पैसा मात्र'. Paisa is rounded to the nearest cent.
Is this safe to use on real cheques?
Yes — the wording follows the standard format accepted by Nepal Rastra Bank, all commercial banks (NIC Asia, Nabil, NIBL, NMB, etc.), and the IRD. Always double-check the result before signing. The tool runs entirely in your browser; nothing is sent to a server.
Can I copy the result?
Yes — tap the copy icon on either output card. The text is copied to your clipboard ready to paste into Word, Excel, an invoice template, or directly onto a cheque field.
